50th Anniversary of the Ramsar Convention
Wetland and Water
February 2 is the World Wetlands Day. This year also sees the 50th anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat. The Yangtze River Basin is a region of rich wetland habitats. Estimates show that there are 25 types of wetlands in the basin which fall into 5 categories, with a total area of 9.45 million hectares. These wetlands account for 17.64% of national total. Natural wetlands in the basin are around 7.51 million hectares, taking up approximately 5.25% of the total basin area (Want et al. 2020).
